Sometimes I aim for a portrait, meeting the animal’s gaze. Other times I step back and let the landscape take the lead, showing the animal in its world.

It took me a while, but I fell for birds. Now I can’t believe I ever overlooked them. Their variety, behaviour, sounds and colours never stop surprising me — and catching that beauty with my camera is one of the best thrills photography gives.

Photographing people was my first love and it never grows old. I’m at my best when I can be the quiet observer, the fly on the wall. Making myself invisible is both the hardest and most rewarding part of telling visual stories — and, I hope, what gives the images their power.
